A more efficient and seamless communication between devices and IT ecosystems is now creating a perfect setting for multiple set of devices or rather things to be able to talk to each other. Welcome to the era of Internet of Things – where it is all about technological enablement of devices and services.

At this year’s CommunicAsia 2015, EnterpriseIT 2015, IoT is one of key themes and there are a lot of companies showcasing their capabilities in this segment.

Speaking at a panel discussion on “what role has to be played in the age of “Internet of Things” – Toh Chai Keong, Assistant CEO, Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore said that IoT segment has got huge potential. “Especially when we look at smart city concepts, IoT can connect various planes in technological and drive seamless automation and enable empowerment of the society,” he added.

Talking on a similar note, Lee Boon Chee, IoT Development, Smart and Save city, Singtel – NCS said that IoT space is perfectly poised to derive better productivity of IT systems. “Whether it is banking or transportation, security & surveillance or manufacturing of goods or even tracking goods in shipping – when there are connected devices, the information sharing will be real time and this is where big value comes in,” he explained.

The IoT space is set to transform the way we go about our daily lives and considerably increase the technology usage for us. The evolution of M2M technologies continues to have a dramatic effect as an increasing number of new markets emerge.

New age applications of IoT in segments such as manufacturing, smart city, smart metering, healthcare etc are drawing up a completely new line of thinking to deliver precisely what the consumers want, when they want and most importantly how they want.

The whole space of IoT is expanding rapidly and with it the technology it uses is reinventing productivity and usability. In such a scenario, it is increasingly becoming important for a country like India to create its own ecosystem of technology partners, solution integrators and systems architects who can conceptualize, design, develop and implement such IoT solutions at the consumer level and create unique value proposition.

A growing number of enterprise in segments such as government, banking, telecoms, manufacturing and transportation are taking huge advantage of the Internet of Things, while smart cities, smart homes, smart grids and smart meters have become common terms now, however, there is a lot more which can be achieved and done with the help of IoT in the coming future.
Banks in India are implementing iBeacon technology – which is all about designing ease of use for customers and delivering the next generation information at the fingertips of customers, just when they need it.

Similarly there is huge scope for IoT in government services including e-health and e-education which can drive a whole new ecosystem of smart devices. Similarly very soon we might see smart cars that can call the emergency services when needed or understand when vehicle insurance is about to get expired and initiate communication with insurers, quite intelligently. All this, will be at play when IoT solutions are designed and implemented.

Some of the examples of IoT implementations –

Smart Parking
Smart Health
Smart Traffic Management
Smart Lightning
Waste Management
Intelligent Transportation Systems
Forest Fire Detection
Air Pollution Control and Management
Landslide and Avalanche Prevention
Early Earthquake Detection

CommunicAsia 2015 and IoT

With a clear focus towards enabling next generation technology enablement, CommunicAsia 2015 happening in Singapore is an ideal place to experience the best in class technological advancements in the IoT space. There are a number of companies which are set to showcase their product portfolio involving Internet of Things.
