Tech Mahindra, NVIDIA to Launch Education LLM Under Project Indus

Tech Mahindra, a leading global provider of technology consulting and digital solutions to enterprises across industries, announced advancements to the existing Project Indus through the launch of a new education LLM. Powered by NVIDIA, Project Indus is a Hindi-first Large Language Model (LLM) built with authentic Indian linguistic and cultural context for sovereign, scalable AI.

The new LLM will debut as an educational model focused on democratizing high-quality learning. It is designed to empower millions of students with a deeper foundational understanding of subjects such as physics and other disciplines, while also embracing India’s rich linguistic and cultural diversity. With support from multiple partners, the new LLM aims to be a one-stop platform for educational use cases in India.

The new education LLM has been developed using advanced AI frameworks and infrastructure support from NVIDIA, including the NVIDIA NeMo framework and deployment through NVIDIA NIM microservices, enabling scalability, performance, and production readiness. To address data scarcity challenges in select languages, the Tech Mahindra team employed innovative techniques, including generating half a billion synthetic tokens with NVIDIA NeMo Data Designer. Additionally, the LLM enables Agentic AI by supporting the creation of autonomous AI agents that can understand and respond fluently in natural Hindi, facilitating AI-driven learning experiences and broader adoption across Hindi-speaking users.

As Project Indus evolves, Tech Mahindra is exploring advancements from NVIDIA Nemotron, NVIDIA’s open model and research ecosystem, to further accelerate sovereign model development. These future enhancements are expected to shorten training cycles, improve instructional quality, and strengthen domain specialization for India-specific education and public-sector use cases.

Building on its earlier foundational LLM with approximately 1.2 billion parameters, Tech Mahindra has now significantly scaled Project Indus to an 8-billion-parameter architecture, marking a major step forward in model capability and maturity. The new version has been purpose-built as an education-focused LLM, aligned with India’s learning needs and national priorities.

Nikhil Malhotra, Chief Innovation Officer & Global Head of AI and Emerging Technologies, Tech Mahindra, said, “AI is becoming central to national digital infrastructure and inclusive growth, but global foundational models are often not designed for countries with deep linguistic and cultural diversity like India. A key industry challenge is the lack of domain-trained language models grounded in local languages and learning contexts, particularly in education. Through Project Indus, our collaboration with NVIDIA directly addresses this gap by delivering a Hindi-first, sovereign AI model that enables scalable, relevant, and accessible AI-powered learning and citizen-centric services for India.”

John Fanelli, Vice President, Enterprise Software, NVIDIA, said, “The global push for sovereign AI is accelerating demand for foundation models tailored to local languages and cultural contexts. By leveraging NVIDIA AI Enterprise, Tech Mahindra delivers the production-ready performance, reliability and scale required to power Project Indus.”

Tech Mahindra, a key partner in India’s sovereign AI efforts, further strengthens its role through expertise in building LLMs tailored for India. Project Indus focuses on scalable, locally grounded AI meeting the country’s unique linguistic, social, and regulatory needs.
