Iron Mountain Strengthens Data Center Presence in EMEA

Iron Mountain, the global enabler in innovative storage, data center infrastructure, asset lifecycle management and information management services, expands its data center presence with the acquisition of XData Properties, one of the largest data center parks in Madrid.

The site has enough power to develop 79 megawatts in the coming years. In addition to the current on-site three-megawatt data center, construction of the first 20-megawatt data center is expected to be completed in 2024.

“The acquisition of XData enables us to meet the growing demand for connected, compliant and sustainable data center services across Europe, and we are excited to strengthen our presence in EMEA,” said Eric Boonstra, Vice President and CEO, Iron Mountain Data Centers EMEA. “Madrid is establishing itself as an emerging strategic market, and this campus allows us to welcome both enterprises and hyperscale customers.”

Madrid is a strategic market experiencing strong growth, with high demand across all segments due to direct fiber optic access linking Madrid to Barcelona, the longest fiber highway in the Iberian Peninsula. This acquisition allows Iron Mountain Data Centers to support a robust ecosystem in which cloud, network, and service providers and consumers can easily connect with each other.

“This acquisition supports our strategy and commitment to selective expansion into emerging data center markets to meet the critical needs of our customers,” said Mark Kidd, executive vice president and general manager of data centers, Iron Mountain. “We are also delighted that Spain is rapidly becoming one of the European leaders in the production of renewable energies, which will allow us to support our sustainability objectives, and those of our customers.”
