De Vlaamse Waterweg deploys HPE to optimize shipping management

HPE has announced that De Vlaamse Waterweg (Flemish Waterways plc), the Flemish government agency responsible for managing and operating the region’s waterways for inland shipping, water management, and recreation, has selected HPE GreenLake cloud to modernize its waterway management operations and support the achievement of local sustainability initiatives.

To meet Flanders’ bold sustainability ambitions, De Vlaamse Waterweg is transforming how freight moves across the region. By shifting transport from congested roads to the region’s vast network of rivers and canals, the agency is helping to cut CO₂ emissions and make logistics more sustainable.

The hybrid cloud platform, HPE GreenLake was selected as the digital backbone to support this transformation, rapidly digitalizing operations with a distributed, private cloud installed in its own data centers. This allows De Vlaamse Waterweg to retain full control over its data, ensuring compliance with strict security and sovereignty standards.

At the same time, HPE GreenLake delivers on-demand scalability, giving the agency the flexibility to adapt to fluctuating workloads and growing traffic volumes, without ever compromising performance or transparency.

Notably, the platform powers the agency’s River Information Services (RIS), a critical communication channel linking vessels with control centers. With HPE GreenLake, RIS runs on a flexible, and future-proof infrastructure, ensuring smooth, safe, and efficient navigation. The system offers cost insights through a transparent pricing model which are instantly accessible at a glance through the HPE Greenlake platform.

Peggy Excelmans, Head of Department General Support at De Vlaamse Waterweg, commented, “HPE GreenLake offers the flexibility, scalability, and efficiency we need to handle peaks in workload demands for new applications in our IT systems,” says Peggy Excelmans, Head of Department General Support at De Vlaamse Waterweg. “It also meets our strict security requirements, giving us complete transparency, ownership, and control of our data. These capabilities are essential to achieving our mission, diverting freight to inland shipping and reducing Flanders’ CO₂ footprint.”

The HPE GreenLake Flex consumption model with peer persistent clusters using HPE Alletra dHCI infrastructure was delivered in collaboration with HPE’s platinum partner, Inetum who provides the frame agreement and managed services. Inetum applied its expertise and played an integral role throughout the sale and infrastructure deployment of the HPE GreenLake solution.

HPE GreenLake cloud allows De Vlaamse Waterweg to centralize its data, while providing a seamless, unified management experience that supports the agency in optimizing traffic.

Stéphane Lahaye, managing director at HPE Belgium, said, “At HPE, we are thrilled to support De Vlaamse Waterweg in streamlining and modernizing its operations,” said Stéphane Lahaye, managing director at HPE Belgium. “HPE GreenLake cloud allows De Vlaamse Waterweg to centralize its data, while providing a seamless, unified management experience that supports the agency in optimizing traffic. We’re confident that our solution offers De Vlaamse Waterweg the right balance of scalability, control, and cost-effectiveness.”
