Broadcom Rejigs Symantec Distribution in India

Broadcom has shared confirmation on its change of guard with regards to distribution of Symantec for SMB business in India. As a result of this change – the Symantec distribution business which was handled by Weston-Comstor has now transitioned to Tech Data Advanced Private Limited India.

“Westcon is no longer our authorized distributor for Symantec in India. We have transitioned that business to Tech Data Advanced Private Limited India, an affiliate of TD Synnex. Customers and partners can continue to purchase through that channel,” Broadcom has mentioned this in a statement.

Speaking on this change of distribution business, a Westcon employee confirmed that the company is no longer working on Symantec business. “Broadcom has not renewed our distribution agreement for India so as a result we are not handling Symantec for Broadcom. However, we are still working on the company’s VMware business in India,” the employee confirmed on conditions of anonymity.

It is interesting to note that this change of hand on Symantec distribution has created confusion within the end user community. Many IT managers reported that they were not able to renew their licenses in a smooth manner.

“We got a typical system generated message that our Symantec licence was expiring in mid September. And we were unable to renew the licence. Frankly speaking, I don’t care who distributes the product as long as there is business continuity. Though, we are happy that the company gave us ‘licence extension’ for use of Symantec,” said a Senior IT Manager for a New Delhi based company using Symantec solutions.

Symantec and the SMBs

Symantec solutions retain popularity among Indian SMBs primarily due to legacy footprint and accessible entry pricing, though this is increasingly a double-edged sword today. Historically, Symantec cultivated India’s mid-market with dedicated SMB teams and localized partner networks reaching Tier II cities.

The base agent bundles device control and DLP features that many Indian regulated SMBs need. Indicative per-device pricing for core endpoint protection ranges roughly ₹2,400–3,600 annually, positioning it as an affordable offering for 50–250 seat deployments.

However, Symantec is not a native SMB product. Industry analyses consistently flag heavier system resource consumption and a steeper admin learning curve compared to lighter competitors. Under Broadcom ownership, renewal increases of 30–100% are now common, pushing mid-market accounts to benchmark alternatives.

Symantec’s SMB popularity therefore reflects a large installed base from its channel-driven past rather than a currently optimized SMB offering.
